Chapter Nine

Two weeks had passed and no more letters arrived. Milly and Crystal were becoming more comfortable by the day. They were leaving the door unlocked more often throughout the day, and Milly was once again running into town to get things from the market while Crystal stayed home resting, without first having to wait for Tommy to come in from working Milly’s land as well as his own. With Crystal having orders to rest from her doctor, neither Milly nor Tommy would let her lift a finger to do more than go to the bathroom.

Crystal was sleeping on the veranda when she was woken by the sound of something falling over in the living room.

“Tommy is that you?” When he didn’t answer she didn’t do what most would and go inside to see what made the sound. Instead, she got up and ran out the screen door, heading out into the field that she thought Tommy was plowing. The air was chilly and all she had on was a thin maternity pajama suit with her fuzzy pink house shoes, and a shawl around her shoulders. Crystal was halfway in the middle of the field before she realized that it was the wrong one. She had forgotten that Tommy told Milly he had to plow the north side of his farm today, so the workers could come in and clear off the debris on the south side. She turned around and stared at the house, thinking how foolish she must look standing out in the middle of the field in her nightclothes, over something that was probably nothing.

She pulled the shawl closer to her body and headed back to the house. She didn’t go back onto the veranda. Instead, she walked around to the back of the house and noticed that the screen door was standing open, like it had gotten stuck on the step when it was pushed back too far. She took three steps back, knowing that screen shouldn’t look that way, and was in no way, shape, or form going into the house by herself.

Milly found Crystal walking around at the end of the driveway when she came home. She pulled the truck over and Crystal hopped in.

“Before you tell me that I’m not supposed to be walking like this, let me explain what happened first,” Crystal spit out immediately.

“You look like ya done seen a ghost, child. Someone come to the house? You get a call?”

“No, I was asleep on the front porch, the veranda, when something woke me up. It was like a bang in the living room. I got scared, so I went out in the field next to the garden thinking Tommy was doing that one today, then I remembered he wasn’t. I should have noticed the back screen when I went to the field, but Milly, it was standing wide open when I came back up to the house. I got so scared I just came out to the end of the drive and waited for you,” she explained.
